Making the Most of the Health Workforce
Achieving country commitments to universal health coverage requires maximizing the efficiency and effectiveness of the health workforce. USAID’s Health Finance and Governance (HFG) project (2012-2018) supported efforts by national governments to optimize the quality and efficiency of the health labor market through policy development and implementation in health workforce production, regulation of the private sector, and initiatives to address maldistribution and inefficiencies. As described in this brief, HFG found that careful stakeholder engagement, governance capacity-building, and thoughtful selection of interventions that could serve as levers for broader reforms were instrumental to achieving successful outcomes.
